Hangzhou, China --- A case of robot-assisted hepatectomy was completed successfully in Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital affiliated with the Medical School of Zhejiang University on 18 January, 2022 with Toumai® Laparoscopic Surgical Robot (Toumai®) independently developed by Shanghai MicroPort MedBot (Group) Co., Ltd. (MicroPort® MedBot®), up to which the center had successfully completed all enrollment surgery cases of confirmatory clinical trial. Under the guidance of Director Xiujun Cai, the confirmatory clinical trial of Chinese-developed robots went on smoothly. During this period, the team of Professor Xiao Liang of General Surgery successfully completed the first case of Chinese-developed robot-assisted resection of left lateral lobe of liver in East China, and set a record of completing three consecutive surgeries on one single day, which fully demonstrated that Toumai® robot is competent for difficult and high-intensity clinical work.
Toumai® provides the high-power 3D images with high magnification, which helps surgeons to locate the anatomy accurately. The high-degree-of-freedom mechanical simulated wrist realizes the operation of surgical instruments inside a narrow anatomical space without dead angle; the hand tremor of surgeons was filtered out, which achieved tissue dissociating operation more precisely and efficiently and improved the surgical accuracy. With the accumulation of robotic surgery experience, the application prospect of Toumai® in minimal invasive surgery becomes wider.
Professor Xiao Liang said, "In the confirmatory clinical trial project, Toumai® has fully demonstrated its superior performance in abdominal surgery. It can provide the highly consistent hand-eye-coordinated operation and immersive 3D high-definition images, and the anatomical structure of tissues and organs and the direction of blood vessels were clear at a glance. It can assist in the operation efficiently. I hope that Toumai® will continue to give full play to the local R&D advantages of ‘Intelligent Manufacturing of China’, speed up the marketization of Chinese-developed high-end robots represented by Toumai®.”
Mr. Yu Liu, Chief Commercial Officer of MicroPort® MedBot®, expressed that, “as a discipline leader, Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital has dedicated to using the minimal invasive technology to serve the mass people. With the strong supports of Professor Xiao Liang and his team, Toumai® has extended to more complex surgeries in the abdominal area, which has accelerated the maturity and improvement of Chinese-developed surgical robots in clinical application. MicroPort® MedBot® will continue to strengthen the collaboration with clinical experts, innovate more iterated products, provide the doctors and patients with the high-quality and generalized robot-assisted total solutions and Make Surgery Easier, Safer and Less Invasive”.
