Pu’er, Yunnan —— A robot-assisted total knee arthroplasty (TKA) surgery has recently been completed in No. 927 Hospital with Honghu Orthopedic Surgical Robot (Honghu) independently developed by MicroPort NaviBot (Suzhou) Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Shanghai MicroPort MedBot (Group) Co., Ltd.( MedBot® ). The No. 927 Hospital is a unit of the multi-center research of MedBot®-assisted TKA. Dewen Kong, director of the Trauma Micro-Orthopedics Department of No. 927 Hospital, cooperated with Professor Chuan Li of No. 920 Hospital and successfully completed the surgery. Pu'er, a city with great integration of ethnic cultures, is the source of the world tea and the Ancient Tea Horse Road. It has actively introduced the robot-assisted surgery technology to improve the medical service level in minority areas. The traditional TKA exerts high technique requirements and is difficult to operate. But the application of surgery robot, as an advanced surgical technology, will help in the standardization, accuracy and efficiency of surgeries and help doctors to benefit more patients.

The case of surgery is a female patient with bilateral knee joint pain, especially the right knee joint, and the symptoms has obviously aggravated in recent days. The case was diagnosed in combination with examination as: bilateral knee joint retrogression (severer in the right knee). Comprehensive analysis suggests a TKA surgery. After the design of a personalized surgical plan and the preoperative communication, the patient became the first one in Pu'er to receive an orthopedic joint robot-assisted surgery.

With the close cooperation of Director Dewen Kong of the No. 927 Hospital with the related functional departments and Professor Chuan Li of the No. 920 Hospital, Honghu has completed its "first show" in Pu'er City, and the surgery is very successful. CT 3D segmentation and reconstruction with Honghu on the knee joints of patient has provided a surgical plan for personalized prosthesis implantation. Compared with the traditional surgery, Honghu provides a more friendly experience of human-computer interaction (HCI), making it easier for operators to make personalized surgical solutions based on the patient's 3D bone model. Honghu HCI Platform guided the robotic arm registration and bone registration nimbly during the surgery, the robotic arms accurately moved to the preplanned position, assisted Director Dewen Kong in the osteotomy of femur and tibia. Compatible with the MicroPort®Orthopedics medial-pivot knee system, the whole operation was completed smoothly and efficiently.

Postoperative measurement shows that the actual osteotomy is completely consistent with the planned value. The user-friendly operating interface of surgery robot respects the doctors' traditional surgical habits and has a short learning curve.

Director Dewen Kong of the Trauma Micro-Orthopedics Department said that, “for TKA, any millimeter deviation of osteotomy will have a significant impact on the postoperative recovery of patients. To ensure the accuracy of osteotomy in traditional TKA, the surgical team need to spend more time in measuring and positioning. With the assistance of robot system, however, the navigation system and the robotic arm cooperate with each other, and the movement range of swing saw is limited to a predetermined safe range, thus improving the accuracy and safety of the whole operation. Meanwhile, it is unnecessary to open the femoral canal in a robot-assisted surgery, and the patient suffered less bleeding and less trauma. The osteotomy was completed accurately, and the force line of patients recovered satisfactorily.”
