Chengdu, China – March 21, 2026 — MicroPort® MedBot™ and West China Hospital of Sichuan University announced the inauguration of the West China International Telesurgery Command Center alongside the successful completion of multiple intercontinental telesurgical procedures using the Toumai® laparoscopic surgical robotic system.

On the same day, surgical teams in China and Brazil completed three cross-regional procedures, including a Nissen fundoplication performed across an approximate distance of 18,000 kilometers with a total bidirectional communication distance of approximately 64,000 kilometers. The procedure was completed over conventional broadband infrastructure with stable system performance throughout. From network setup to completion, the entire process was accomplished within four days, demonstrating operational feasibility under real-world conditions.
Prof. Carlos Eduardo Domene, who performed the procedure from Brazil, commented:
"Although Brazil and Chengdu are nearly 18,000 kilometers apart, the ultra-high-definition, multi-angle imaging system provided exceptional visual clarity and realistic depth perception. The overall experience was stable and intuitive, enabling precise surgical performance."
The West China International Telesurgery Command Center is designed to support remote surgical procedures, multicenter clinical collaboration, surgical education, and research. It integrates clinical, academic, and training functions with 24-hour operational support.
Prof. Alex Mottrie noted that the significance of telesurgery extends beyond individual procedures by supporting greater collaboration between surgical teams across geographic boundaries.
