Toumai® Surgical Robotic System Used in Remote Complex Cardiac Surgery Combining ASD Repair and Tricuspid Valvuloplasty
2026-03-18 GMT+8 AM 11:17

Guangzhou, China – March 14, 2026 — MicroPort® MedBot™ announced that its Toumai® laparoscopic surgical robotic system was used to perform a remote cardiac procedure combining atrial septal defect (ASD) repair with tricuspid valvuloplasty under cardiopulmonary bypass with cardiac arrest.

The procedure was performed by a multidisciplinary team led by Prof. Zhang Xiaoshen, Vice President of the First Affiliated Hospital of Jinan University, together with Prof. Cai Nian of Centro Hospitalar Conde de São Januário, Macau, following comprehensive technical validation and ethical approval.

Cardiac surgery remains one of the most technically demanding applications for robotic-assisted surgery, particularly when intracardiac structural repair is performed under cardiopulmonary bypass. In this procedure, delicate suturing and structural repair were conducted remotely over a standard broadband connection, placing high demands on system stability, imaging quality, and network performance. One-way network latency was maintained at approximately 11 milliseconds throughout the procedure. Intraoperative imaging remained clear and stable, and the surgical team reported an operating experience comparable to performing the procedure locally.

Prior to the remote operation, the same team completed a series of robot-assisted complex cardiac procedures between March 10 and 11, 2026, including mitral valve replacement and combined mitral valve and tricuspid valve interventions, to validate system performance and clinical readiness.

The Toumai® surgical robotic system is designed to support minimally invasive procedures with high-definition imaging, instrument precision, and remote operability across a range of surgical specialties. MicroPort® MedBot™ continues to collaborate with clinical partners to advance robotic-assisted surgery across specialties and geographic settings, supporting broader access to high-quality surgical care.
