Ghent, Belgium – June 8, 2026 — MicroPort® MedBot™ announced the successful completion of a robot-assisted telesurgical procedure using the Toumai® surgical robotic system over the Starlink Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite network. Performed by robotic urologist Dr. Geert De Naeyer in Belgium, the procedure was completed without network interruption and maintained an end-to-end communication latency of approximately 70 milliseconds.

The milestone further expands the Toumai® system's demonstrated compatibility with a broad range of communication infrastructures, including dedicated fibre networks, 5G, broadband internet, and both geostationary (GEO) and Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite networks. Reliable, low-latency connectivity remains a critical requirement for robotic telesurgery, and LEO satellite technology offers an additional option for extending specialist surgical care to rural, mountainous, island, and other underserved regions where terrestrial infrastructure may be limited.
During the procedure, Dr. De Naeyer performed a robot-assisted radical prostatectomy using the Toumai® system. Throughout the operation, communication remained stable and robotic control was maintained without interruption. Dr. De Naeyer and Dr. Edward Lambert, who was located at the patient site, alternated control of the robotic system during the procedure, demonstrating a collaborative workflow that may support remote mentoring, surgical education, and specialist consultation.
